Tina Anderson:
 (2000: 12th MDF: danced in a work by Risa Cohen)

Stephane Andre:  (2003: 15th MDF) Stephane is a native of France. He completed his dance and music studies in 1987 at the Paris National Conservatory under the teaching of Attilio Labis and Roland Duflot. Mr Andre was awarded a scholarship at the San Francisco Ballet School after participating in the Lausannes Competition. Stephane has been dancing throughout North America with companies such as Joffrey Ballet, Les Grandes Ballets Canadiens, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Oregon Ballet Theater. He has been dancing locally for seven years with companies such as Zenon, Ballet Of the Dolls, Minnesota Dance Theater and James Sewell Ballet. Mr Andre has worked with Bebe Miller, Mark Morris, James Kudelka and Hans Van Manen, among other renowned choreographers. He has been teaching ballet in the USA, Canada and Japan. Stephane is a certified Pilates instructor from Stott Toronto. Stephane performed in hisown work "T", a pas de deux (danced with Jennifer Hart) representing the Minnesota Dance Theater, on the Dance Festival. (updated: June 2003)

Chris Aiken:  (1997: 9th MDF) Chris Aiken is one of the leading dance improvisation artists in America.

Kirill Bak:  (Ballet Minnesota: 2001: 11th - 13th MDF)     Kirill is a graduate of the famous Vaganova Institute in St Petersbury, Russia. He has been a prinicipal dancer with the world famous Asif Eifman Ballet, has toured the world and presentlyis a principal dancer for Ballet Minnesota. His roles for Ballet Minnesota include the principal in "Paquita", "Play Us A Waltz", the "Egg", "Nutcracker" and "Bournonville Dances". Kirill'sstrong presence and classical technique make for a dynamic presence on stage.   (updated: May 2001)

Jesse Bethke:  (1993: 5th MDF; 1996: 8th MDF)     Jesse is the artistic director of El Ballet Mexicano. Formerly with Ballet Folkloric in Mexico, he brings a stong sense of Mexican dance to Minnesota.

MaryAnn Bradley:  (2003: 15th MDF: performed in Uri Sands "Postcards") hails from Dayton, Ohio, where she studied and performed with Dance Theatre Dayton and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company II. She came to the Twin Cities (Mpls/St Paul) in 1997 after graduating with a BA in dance from Point Park College. She is currently a member of Jazzdance by Danny Buraczeski, Robin Stiem's Dancing People Company, and can be seen this August performing with Arena Dances by Matthew Janczewski. She has performed works by Uri Sands, Lou Fancher, and Cathy Young and is a 2001 of the McKnight Dancere Fellowship. (updated: June 2003)

Danny Burazcerki:  (1992: 4th MDF) Danny is founder/artistic director of JazzDance. His choreography is sought after nationally and has been set on companies such as Boston Ballet. He has also appeared (with his company) at the famous Jacob's Pillow summer festival. Danny continues to lead the dance community in innovative choreography in the realm of jazz dance.

Michael Casper:  (1997: 9th MDF)   Michael, formerly with New Dance Ensemble, presented a solo titled "Top Gun".

Maria Cheng:  (1988: 1st MDF)      Maria has an ability to arrive the power of movement by directing our attention to the subtle beauty and expression behind it. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, she is now the director of dance.

Robert Cleary:  (1998: 10th MDF)    Robert is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Dance program. After dancing with the Minnesota Dance Theater he worked as an independent choreographer until become choreographer in residence for Kanopy Dance Company.

Risa Cohen:  (2001: 13th MDF)      Risa Cohen moved to New York City after graduating from Towson University in Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Neurological Psychology. She spent the next five years working with the Margolis Brown Company which relocated to Minneapolis in 1995. As an emerging choreographer, Ms. Cohen focuses on a movement-based vocabulary that combines powerful dramatic intentions with modern dance technique. Ms. Cohen founded Precipice Dance Theater in 1997 and since then has produced dances that address various issues reflecting humanity such as alienation, obsession and oppression. "Babble", which premiered at the Red Eye theater (1999), depicted her experiences of growing up with dyslexia. "Giselle", which also premiered at the Red Eye Theater (2000), examined the underlying impulses and deep obsessions embedded in the classic tale. The third concert,"Unraveled", presented at the Music Box Theater (2000), explored the struggle between feminisim and the Jewish patriarchal tradition. Ms Cohen has also presented works at the Walker Art Center, Southern Theater, and the Loring Playhouse.
      
In February 2001 Risa was commissioned by Ballet Minnesota to create a new work for the 5th annual Youth Concert Series. The dance, "Finlandia", is an abstract interpretation of the music. Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (considered by many as Finland's greatest composer): was the composer (1890) of this rich piece.
       Presently Risa working on her own conert "Self Storage" which will be held at the Southern Theater in June. An excerpt from this new work will be premiered on the Minnesota Dance Festival.

Sam Costa:  (1996: 8th MDF)    Formerly director of Ram Island Art Center in Maine, Sam relocated to Minnesota where he became associate director of Zenon Dance Company. After leaving that position he created 10,000 Dances and taught at Hamline University until his untimely death.

Suzanna DiPalma: Suzanna is the founder/artistic director of the acclaimed Zorongo Flamenco dance company. Her mastery of the art of flamenco dance combined with a sense of telling stories creates a dynamic blend of movement and music which is compelling to watch.

Taylor Dreyling
:  (1998-2007 )   Taylor is a graduate of Classical Ballet Academy and has been a Ballet Minnesota member since 2001. She has appeared in many classics such as: 'La Bayadere", 'Paquita', "Don Quixote', 'Coppelia', 'Swan Lake' and 'Giselle'. She has also been featured in works by Andrew Rist such as 'Pachelbel Canon', 'Italian Symphony', and 'Black Dog Cafe'. Taylor has also received many scholarships including University of Kansas, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Ballet and Boston Ballet. (updated: July 2007)

Michael Engel:  (1992: 4th MDF)   Formerly a member of New Dance Ensemble, Michael in an independent choreographer.

Allan Fields: At the time of his appearance on MDF Alan was artistic director of Minnesoa Ballet located in Duluth, Minnesota. Since becoming director he expanded the school, changed the company name from Duluth Ballet to Minnesota Ballet and improved not only the company but its performance oppourtunities. Alan was formerly a dancer with the Cleveland / San Jose Ballet under the direction of Dennis Nahat. At persent, Allen has taken a leave of absence from Minnesota Ballet (updated: May 2007)

Ruthena Fink:  (2007: 19th MDF)      Ruthena performed with the Andahazy Ballet Borealis Company in Sleeping Beauty, Scherazade and Sernade. For two seasons, while studying with the Minnesota Dance Theater, she danced the roles of a snowflake and flower in their Nutcracker production. While dancing with Classical Ballet Academy, under the direction of Jo Savino, she performed in the ballets Giselle, Coppelia and Firebird. For the pas 23 years Ruthena has owned and operated the Grand Jete dancewear store in St Paul.

Wynne Fricke:  (1996: 8th MDF)    Wynne is a graduate of the Tische School of Arts in New York. After moving to Minneapolis, she joined Zenon Dance Company. She has a wonderful sense of design and movement which she brings to her works.

Andrea J FrenzelL: (Zorongo Flamenco: 2003: 15th MDF)
      Andrea found flamenco in 1993. Her background in dance and Spanish language unite in this art form. A Minneapolis native, Ms Frenzel has studied and worked under the guidance of internationally recognized flamenco choreographer Susana di Palma. She is a founding member of the Twin Cities based flamenco ensemble 'Majas', and has performed with Susana di Palma's Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre in "Kathak Flamenco: Negra" 2000, "Soul y Flamenco" 2001, and "Gernika" 2002. She also performs regularly with renowned Flamenco guitarist Michael Hauser and his groups Trio Flamenco, Cuadro Flamenco and Cuadro Folklorico.
      To keep up with the current trends and techniques of her art, Ms Frenzel travels frequently to Madrid, Spain, where she studies Flamenco dance with renowned teachers such as Maria Magdalena, Yolanda Heredia, La China, Antonio Reyes, Domingo Ortega and Tomas de Madrid
       Since joining the teaching staff of Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre and School in Minneapolis in 1999, Ms Frenzel has taught workshops and master classes around the Twin Cities and in Greater Minnesota. She is currently on the faculty of the University of Minnesota Dance Department.

Robert Gardner:
Robert was formerly with the Joffrey and Cleveland Ballet. As choreogapher in residence for the Minnesota Ballet (Duluth, MN) he has created many new works for the company.

Matthew Gasper: Matthew trained in Fargo under his parents instruction. Besides his abilty as an accomplished tap dancer, he also is an emerging young choeographer with a dynamic sense of movement and timing. Matthew created the male lead in Dennis Nahat's "Blue Suede Shoes" when with the Cleveland/San Jose Ballet. Presently he is based in NYC.

Svetlana Gavrilova:  (Ballet Minnesota: 2001: 11th - 13th MDF: she appeared in the classics La Bayadere, Paquita, Bournonville Dances and Andrew Rist's River Songs)     Svetlana graduated from the famous Vaganova insitute in St Petersburg, Russia.. Her trainning was supervised by the famous Russian teachers Alle Sizova & Marina Vasilieva. Performing & touring the world with the Mussorsky Theater, she danced the lead roles of Giselle in "Giselle", and Esmerlda in "Esmerlda". Svetlana has danced roles with Ballet Minnesota in "Paquita", "Nutcracker", "La Bayadere" and "I'm From Minnesota"   (updated: May 2001)

Lindsay Glesener:  (Ressl Dance Company: 2001: 13th MDF)      Lindsay Glesener danced with the Minnesota Ballet in Duluth from 1998 to 2000. She now lives in St. Paul where she attends Hamline University. Lindsay studied ballet from a very early age at the Minnesota Ballet along with modern and jazz.   (updated: May 2001)

Matthew Harrison:  (Ressl Dance Company: 2001: 13th MDF)     Matthew Harrison, a Minneapolis native, began his training at the Minnesota Dance Theatre. He danced with the Minnesota Ballet for five years dancing in The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Coppelia, and contemporary works. Matthew has previously performed in "Dances on the Lakewalk" in pieces by Robert Gardner and Doris Ressl and was guest artist with Ballet Arts Springboard Division.   (updated: May 2001)

Heide Hauser Jasmin:  (1998: 10th MDF)    Heidi is the artistic director of Nancy Hauser Dance Company located in Minneapolis, MN. The modern company, founded by Nancy Hauser (Heidi's mother) continues to produce an annual season of modern works. Heidi has also developed a cross cultural exchange progarm with the Osaka area of Japan. Heidi presented the solo "Chair Concerto" on the festival.

Melanie Hughes:  (Ballet Minnesota: 2001: 13th MDF)     Melanie joined Ballet Minnesota in November 2000. She has trained at the Royal Ballet in England and the Australian Ballet in Australia. Melanie has danced with the Australian Ballet, Ballet West, Milwaukee Ballet and James Sewell Ballet. Since joining Ballet Minnesota, Melanie has danced the Rose in the Nutcracker, the lead in Paquita and performed in this year's Capital New Year. Melanie is also a guest artist with Precipice Dance Theater.  

Jason Jacobs :  (2007: 19th MDF)      Jason began tap dancing at the age of nine in Pittsford, NY. A Member of the Louisville Ballet at the age of 18, he continued on to dance with the North Carolina Dance Theater, Chautauqua Ballet and the Complexions Contemporary Ballet. He has had the pleasure of touring internationally and working with many of today's young and innovatice choreographers. In September 2006, Jason moved to Minnesota, dancing with TUDance. In August Jason will leave for Europe where he has a job in Germany. Jason performed the pas de trois & Spanish in Ballet Minnesota's 'Swan lake'

Maryann Johnson:  (2003: 15th MDF)    Performed in Ballet Minnesota's 'Coppelia. Maryann Johnson is a founding member of Ballet of The Dolls and has danced multiple roles in over 30 original works by Myron Johnson. She has also performed with Children;s Theater, Minnesota Opera, St Paul City Ballet under the direction of Jo Savino, Andahazy Ballet Company and Duluth Ballet. She is currently teaching for Classical Ballet Academy and also works as a physical therapist for OSI.

Myron Johnson:  (1989: 2nd MDF)     Myron is artistic director of "Ballet of the Dolls", a company he founded in the 1980's. His works are not only musical and intriguing but have a stong sense of purpose and dynamics which sets him apart as a gifted choreographer.      (updated: July 2007)

Oksana Konobeyeva:  (13th-19th MDF)      After graduating from the Novosibirsk Ballet School (Russia), Oksana won First Prize at the Vaganova Ballet Competition in St Petersburg, Russia. In 1990 Ms Konobeyeva joined the Y. Grigorovich Ballet - Bolshoi Theater. Some of the soloist and principal roles she perfromed included Odette-Odile in "Swan Lake", Aurora and Princess Florine in "Sleeping Beauty" and many others. In 1994 she joined the Moscow Renaissance Ballet where her repetoire included "Pas de Quatre", "Tailsman" and "Paquita". In 1996 she won The First Prize and a Gold Medal at the International Ballet Competition in Luxembourg. In the same year Oksana joined American Ballet Theater where she was promoted to soloist in 1996. Besides perfroming the classics, she has performed in new works by Twyla Tharp, John Neumeier and Robert Hill. Some of her teachers included: M Lavrovsky, R. Karelskaya, L Ribinkina & N Fedeychev from the Bolshoi Theater.

Justin Leaf
:    (2007: 19th MDF)  Justin will begin his 7th year with the James Sewell Ballet in August of 2007. Previously, he has danced with the Julliard Dance Ensemble, Netherlands Dance Theater and Pacific Northwest Ballet. He recieved his dance training at Goucher College, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and the Julliard school where he recieved his BFA in 2001. Last year, Justin created 'Broadway Bound...and Gagged', a cabaret show with Brooke Murphy for performance at Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in Minneapolis.       (updated: July 2007)

Jim Lieberthal  (1998: 10th MDF)    Jim is an independent choreograher who has an ability to create unsual movement, Jim has also created works for people in wheelchairs. Jim presented his classic solo work "Albatross".

Nicholas Lincoln :  (2006 & 2007: 18th & 19th MDF)      Nicholas performed in the corps de ballet and soloist roles for Grand Rapids Ballet, Dayton Ballet and Cleveland / San Jose Ballet. He is currently a company member iwth James Sewell Ballet. Nicholas performed in Giselle on MDF18 and was the Jester in Swan Lake on MDF 19.

Lisa McKhann:  (Ressl Dance Company: 2001: 13th MDF)     Lisa McKhann began dancing in Christina Mohn dances with a variety of Minnesota dance companies: Ressl Dance! (since 1992), John Munger's Third Rabbit Dance Ensemble, and the American Heritage Dance Company formed by Maria Busciano which performs works by Isadora Duncan. Lisa studied at the School of the Minnesota Ballet for eight years, performing in The Nutcracker, Giselle, Swan Lake, Coppelia, and contemporary works. This summer (2001) she will be performing in the annual Fringe Festival in Minneapolis with modern choreographer Ray Terrill and in "Dances on the Lakewalk." (updated: May 2001)

Deborah Elias Morse: (Zorongo Flamenco: 2003: 5th MDF)
      Debra has studied Flamenco dance since 1994 under the guidance of Susana di Palma. She has also studied in Spain, taking classes with Flamenco masters Merche Esmeralda, La Tati, Ciro and Antonio Reyes. She is a founding member of Majas and has danced with Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre in Garden of Names, Kathak Flamenco: United Rhythm-Passion, First I Dream, La Virtud Negra, and Soul y Flamenco. Besides these theatre works, Ms Morse performs traditional Flamenco in a variety of venues in and around the Twin Cities, as well as in K-12 schools as part of the St Paul Chamber Orchestra Cultural Partners Program.      (updated: April 2003)

Toni Pierce-Sands:
 (2003: 15th MDF, performed in "Chaaya" co-choeographed by Uri Sands and Aparna Ramaswamy)    A Minnesota native, Toni has performed with the MInnesota Dance Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre - where she was a featured soloist in such signature pieces as 'Revelations' and 'Cry', Tanz Forum (Germany) and Company Rick Odums (Paris). She has also appeared in the Twin Cities as a guest performer with Ragamala Music and Dance Theatre, Shapiro and Smith Dance, Stuart Pimsler Dance Theater, and Robin Steihm's Dancing People Company. Her command of the Horton technique has led her to teaching posts throughout the United States and Europe. She returned to Minnesota five years ago and currently teaches in the University of Minnesota Department of Theater Arts and Dance, as well as in the St Paul and Minneapolis Public Schools. Toni Pierce-Sands is also rehearsal director for the University Dance Theatre   (updated: June 2003)

Doris Ressl:  (2001: 13th MDF)    Doris Ressl, artistic director of Ressl Dance! and choreographer, began her dance career in Chicago where she received a BA in Dance from Columbia College, was a member of 627 Performance Space, the Chicago Dance Medium, and an independent choreographer. After receiving an MFA from Smith College, she joined the University of Minnesota, Duluth Department of Theatre. Ressl teaches during the summer at the School of the Minnesota Ballet in Duluth. She just completed a one year teaching contract at Radford University in Radford, Virginia as Assistant Professor of Dance. A recipient of state and local grants, including a McKnight Choreographer's Fellowship and Arrowhead Regional Arts Council Artist's Fellowship, Ressl presents her work throughout Minnesota. In 1996 Ressl choreographed for the Minnesota Ballet's "Choreographer's Conference" and in 1999 for their "Seven Choreographers Plunge." In 1999, Doris was selected as a finalist for Artists & Communities: America Creates for the Millennium, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.         (updated: May 2001)

Byron Richards: Byron

Andrew Rist:  (1-19th MDF)    Andrew is founder/artistic director of Ballet Minnesota and Minnesota Dance Festival. He likes to focus upon collaborations with composers as well as story ballets. The company, Ballet Minnesota, besides producing the Festival also produces the Youth Concert Sereies, Summer Tour and the annual Nutcracker. This year Andrew will present a children's story ballet: "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". The musical score is by French composer Paul Dukas. The score was first performed in1897 at the Societe Nationale.                 (updated: May 2001)

Cheryl Rist:  (1-19th MDF)    Cheryl is director of the Classical Ballet Academy, official school of Ballet Minnesota. Each year Ballet Minnesota restages a Classic Ballet for the festival. Cheryl has been responsible for resetting these classics which include "Swan Lake", "Paquita", "Les Sylphides" on the festival. This year Cheryl chose to set the great classic "La Bayadere" which premiered in St Petersburg, Russia in 1877. The opening scene of Act II, which will be presently on the festival, is considered by many to be one of classical ballet's greatest choreographic moments.

Peggy Seipp:  (2003: 15th MDF, performed in Uri Sands 'Postcards' ) Peggy grew up training and performing with the MInnessota Dance Theatre where she remained for 24 years. In addition to training at MDT she studied with the School of American Ballet and Royal Winnipeg Ballet. With the Minnesota Dance Theater Peggy recieve critical acclaim for her Sugar Plum Fairy in Loyce Houlton's Nutcracker Fantasy and Glen Tetley's Mythical Hunters and Loyce Houlton's Romeo and Juliet Balcony pas de deux. She has performed works by Loyce Houlton, Wynn Fricke,Robert Hill, Stepane Andre and Uri Sands. She has performed in Europe with Stephane Andre's Moving In. Peggy has danced with James Sewell Ballet for 2 years. She holds a BA degree in Communications/Secondary Education from the Univesity of St Thomas.              (updated: June 2003)

James Sewell: (2nd &15th MDFJames is artistic director/founder of the renowned James Sewell Dance Company based in Minneapolis, MN. James choreography is both technically demanding as well as artistically innovative with a good sense of humor added in on occasion. Formerly James was a principal dancer with the famous Elliot Feld Ballet Company.

Casandra Shore:  (1998: 10th MDF)    Casandra is the founder/artistic director of Jawaakir Dance Company based in Minneapolis, MN. She has studied Middle Eastern dance for over 20 years and is widely considered one of the premier performance artists in this dance art form.

Ted Southern
:  (2007: 19th MDF)    Ted performed the role of Rothbart in Ballet Minnesota's 4act 'Swan Lake'. Ted trained with Frank Bourman and danced for Loyce Houlton's Minnesota Dance Theatre, as well as many companies outside the Twin Cities. Currently a company member with Ballet of the Dolls, Ted most recently performed with Ballet Minnesota in Black Dog Cafe and Swan Lake      (updated: July 2007)

David Stright:  (1998: 9th - 12th MDF)    David trained with the Andahazy Ballet. He has danced many classical ballets while dancing with Ballet Minnesota such as Les Sylphiles, the Nutcracker, Bournonville Dances, and Giselle.

Deborah JinzaThayer (2003: 15th MDF: performed her own choreography)  
Deborah Jinza Thayer has been performing and choreographing in multidisciplinary work for over ten years in New York City, Washington DC metro region, and Minneapolis. A native New Yorker, she graduated from John Hopkins University and received an MFA in Dance from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Since relocating to Minneapolis in 1997, she has been presenting her Movement Architecture which constructs imagery by blending dance and theater in strutured enviorments. She has twice been a semi-finalist for France's Renocntres choreographies internationales de Seine-Sait-Denis (Bagnolet). She currently teaches technique and composition at Zenon Dance Company and School in Minneapolis.

Lise Thurell:  (1998: 10th MDF)    Lise is the artistic director of Kanopy Dance Company in Madison, WI. Formerly, Lise was a company member of the famous Martha Graham Dance Company.

Brianna VandeVelde:  (Ballet Minnesota: 2001: 6th - 13th MDF)     Brie is a graduate of the Classical Ballet Academy. She has been dancing with Ballet Minnesotafor 3 years. Her roles include Columbine & Rose in the Nutcracker; soloisst in Paquita, LesSylphides, La Bayadere and Swan Lake. She has also danced lead roles in Play Us A Waltz, The "Egg" (a rockballet), and Flower Festival from Genzano pas de deux.   (updated: May 2001)

Erin Warn:    (1989-1996, 2003-2007: )  Erin is currently a company member with Ballet Minnesota and a graduate of Classical Ballet Academy in St Paul. She has danced soloist roles in the classical ballets: Nutcracker, Giselle, Swan Lake and in original works such as Black Dog Cafe and Pachelbel Canon by Andrew Rist, 'Solsstice' by Sallyann Mulcahy and 'Gloria' by Maryann Johnson.  (updated: July 2007)

Michael Yonkers:
   (1991: 3rd MDF)  Michael danced with the Nancy Hauser dance company before becoming an independent choreographer. He has an excellent sense of the use of minimal movement which is his forte.

Kathy Young:  (1997: 9th MDF) Starting dance trainning late, Kathy sense of line, musicallity and form allowed her to progress quickly. After dancing with JazzDance, she formed her own company. Her movement is musical, daring and intriguing.
